Facebook on Monday introduced the messenger kids app, which allows the world's largest social network to expand into the untapped market under the age of 13, giving parents the opportunity to take full control of what their children have seen.
Facebook requires at least 13 years of age, but the new Child Messenger application gives it a chance to win the brand loyalty of younger children while Facebook faces competition from teens from social networking platforms like Snape Chat.

Facebook has said research has shown that young children use most of the technology tools on a regular basis, but on applications that are made for adults and young people. This raises concerns among parents that their children may be in contact with strangers.
There are already some other applications that children can use but with parental consent, and children can communicate with their grooms by using text messages on their cell phones.

While parents were willing to allow their children aged 6 to 12 to use social media as long as there was strict control over them, Visebo's Messenger for Children requires parents to set up an account and approve the contacts of their children.
"There are a few applications in the messaging market that give control to parents," said Facebook spokeswoman Lauren Svensson. "We'll see how kids use them, and that will allow any updates necessary to be applied to upcoming releases as necessary.

Children's Messenger application can be controlled by children's Facebook account, which allows children to use video chat, picture messages or any kind of video or text messages for friends who are supported by their parents.

The application was unveiled on Monday as a preview because it is now available in the United States on Apple's operating systems and ios systems, where the application was under test and development.
Facebook said it had consulted with 1,200 mothers and fathers as well as security and development specialists on the Internet, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Safety Communication, the National Association of Parents and Teachers and the Media and Child Health Center.
